Tis the Season for Giving!

Posted on: December 24, 2020

Tis the Season for Giving! The LMJH Service Learning & Leadership class has been hard at work all semester learning about local non-profits and chose four organizations to support with donations. These service-minded students want to thank the community for their generous donations collected over the two weeks prior to Winter Break. The donations are being prepared to send to the following charities: Matthew 25 Ministries, Ronald McDonald House, Sub Zero Mission & Highland County Animal Shelter.

The Service Learning Class decided as a group to gift Sub Zero Mission a $1250 grant made possible by a partnership with Magnified Giving. Sub Zero Mission provides cold-weather necessities to homeless veterans. We are so proud of these Panther students, who understand the value of the essential work these non-profits do in our community.

The Early Journey

The Service Learning & Leadership class at LMJS began First Semester by identifying, studying, and finding ways to help improve the outcome of social issues that impact our community. This student-lead, project-based class embarked upon their journey to help others by learning about empathy, how different perspectives on an issue can lead to a more well-rounded thought process, and even important life-skills, such as how to make an effective phone call and active listening techniques.

After learning about a variety of social issues, the class was broken down into groups, each focused on a specific issue that they feel passionately about. Examples of group topics include: Health/Mental Health, Children/Education/Social Justice, Hunger/Poverty, Disaster Relief, Animals, and Military/Veteran Services. The students researched their areas of focus and chose local organizations - Matthew 25 Ministries, Ronald McDonald House, Sub Zero Mission & Highland County Animal Shelter- with whom to work throughout the semester to address these causes.
